The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With approximately 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.
Within the INFORM precision medicine registry study we generated a molecular diagnostics platform, which enables us to identify therapeutic targets in a high-throughput manner. However, clear therapeutic targets are only identified in 50% of cases, the remaining patients lack actionable alterations. This occurs particularly in brain tumors, sarcomas and neuroblastoma, indicating significant, currently unmet needs in precision medicine. The main aim of our COMPASS consortium is to implement direct ex vivo functional drug response profiling of patient-derived cancer cells (PDCs) to discover unexpected drug efficacies and drug re-positioning opportunities. By complementing the molecular analysis by functional information we will provide additional key information for precision paediatric oncology.
Tasks/Skills: Within COMPASS, the main task of the postdoc candidate will be the development and implementation of a bioinformatical analysis pipeline for metabolic and image-based drug screening data derived from primary tumor samples of paediatric cancer patients. Furthermore, the postdoc candidate will contribute to the generation of a large-scale online data resource of drug efficacies with integrated omics data providing a basis for novel precision therapies for incurable paediatric tumors. We are looking for someone who ideally has both, experience in high-content 3D image analysis of phenotypic drug screens with experience in image analysis- and classifier software (preferably cell profiler, Matlab) as well as in general computational analysis skills, including the development of interactive shiny apps and data visualization tools.
Affiliation: The postdoc project is part of COMPASS, a European consortium coordinated by DKFZ, KiTZ, translational oncology (Prof. Dr. Olaf Witt and Dr. Sina Oppermann). The Postdoc will be co-supervised by KiTZ Clinical Bioinformatics Group (Natalie Jäger, https://www.kitz-heidelberg.de/en/research/researchgroups/cns-brain-tumors/group-clinical-bioinformatics/).

- Master in bioinformatics or in a related scientific field (or equivalent degree) and successfully completed PhD
- Bioinformatics background/ computational analysis skills
- Basic knowledge in scripting languages (for example, R, Perl, or Phyton)
- Knowledge in high-content 3D image-analysis and classifier software (cell profiler, Matlab)
- Team player, good communication and presentation skills
- Very good knowledge of the English language (spoken and written)
