The National Center of Tumor Diseases (NCT) Dresden is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center, the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden, the Faculty of Medicine at TU Dresden, and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). The NCT with sites in Heidelberg and Dresden is the leading oncological center in Germany and is being further expanded to an international center of excellence regarding point-of-care and individualized cancer medicine.

The German Cancer Research Center is seeking for the Preclinical Model Unit (PMU) at the partner site Dresden of the National Center of Tumor Diseases a scientific coordinator.

The PMU is the central platform for the systematic establishment and characterization of patient-derived tumor models at the NCT Dresden site. An essential task is the cross-entity generation of personalized tumor models of cancer patients undergoing surgery at university hospital Dresden, the molecular characterization of these models and the testing of their sensitivity to therapeutics. These extensively characterized personalized tumor models are then made available for basic science and translational questions by interested research groups on campus.


Job description:

You will be responsible for coordinating the central workflow for generating patient-derived tumor models at the site, managing PMU collaborations, and developing new protocols. Independent development and processing of innovative new scientific projects in the context of the PMU is strongly encouraged.

In addition, your responsibilities include:

  • Elaborating and coordinating the implementation and further development of protocols for model development and model characterization
  • Providing guidance to the PMU's technical and study assistants
  • Implementation of established protocols for the production of patient-derived tumor models in vitro and in vivo
  • Development and advancement of new protocols for primary cell cultivation
  • Quality assurance and expansion of generated patient-derived tumor models
  • Cellular and molecular characterization of tumor models
  • Data evaluation and interpretation
  • Handling of correspondence and inquiries from internal and external cooperation partners
  • Publication of research results
  • Regular reporting of PMU activities to the heads of the unit and the NCT directorate



  • University degree with above-average success preferably in life sciences; PhD desired
  • Profound experience in cell biological work (especially primary cell culture); knowledge in organoid culture is desirable
  • Proficiency in standard molecular biology methods (DNA, RNA and protein purification, PCR methods, western blot, etc.)
  • Knowledge in bioinformatics data analysis is an advantage
  • Distinctly structured and strategy-oriented way of working
  • Reliable, efficient and independent working style
  • Confident verbal and written communication skills
  • Very good knowledge of English, both written and spoken
  • Very good knowledge of German is an advantage
  • Friendly and self-confident appearance, a communicative, open personality
  • High degree of flexibility and commitment
  • Organizational skills, quick comprehension and analytical thinking skills
