The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The AI Health Innovation (AIH) Cluster combines the excellence and expertise of several renowned research and health institutions in the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region to concentrate and excel the existing research potential in modern health sciences. The main aim of the program is to foster research at the forefront of AI-based research by systematically interlinking biomedical data with excellent AI approaches for innovative application in the health sector.

As part of the AIH Cluster, we seek to establish a competence team that will foster novel innovations in AI-centered data solutions. A core goal of these activities is to establish a secure research environment that enables scientists to carry out AI-based analytics in a controlled environment. To lead this activity, we are looking to appoint an experienced technical lead. This will be a central position for coordination of activities within the AIH Cluster and connected infrastructures and initiatives, such as the ELLIS Heidelberg Unit. The team lead will develop novel technical concepts and coordinate to be implemented by the competence centers of the AIH Cluster.

Your responsibilities:

As part of this lively and dynamic network of excellent partners from versatile backgrounds, your specific responsibilities in the Data Technology Competence Center of the cluster would be:

  • Leadership of a technical development team within the AIH Cluster and coordination with associated activities
  • Development of innovative technical concepts for federated data analytics based on cloud technologies
  • Contributions to and development of IT security concepts for sensitive medical data
  • Participation in and contribution to international networks (e.g. 1+Million Genomes, European Open Science Cloud) 
  • Design and specification of features, aligned with international standards
  • Collaboration with local and international developers

Requirements:

  • PhD in computer science, medical informatics, bioinformatics, computational biology or similar background with a focus on bioinformatics and/or data science; alternatively a MSc or equivalent qualification with complementary years of relevant experience in IT environments
  • Extensive experience in IT and bioinformatics with relevant experience in the development, coordination and operation of data infrastructures, AI, software development or cloud computing
  • Experience in the operation of data infrastructures in an academic or industrial setting, ideally in a cloud environment
  • Hands-on experience with workflow development and genomics data analysis
  • Solid knowledge of IT security principles and expertise in the adaptation of IT systems for GDPR compliance is beneficial
  • Excellent project management skills proven in an academic or industrial setting are a prerequisit
  • Ability to work independently and creatively, articulate technical needs precisely, set clear goals and work within an interdisciplinary setting, while communicating with other external partners
  • Excellent communication skills in English
