The Division of Signaling and Functional Genomics (headed by Prof. Dr. Michael Boutros) at the German Cancer Research Center is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to investigate cellular phenotypes by analyzing image-based screens.
Our division is interested in signaling pathways important for development, stem cell homeostasis as well as ones that are often mutated in cancer. One major focus is on Wnt signaling in colorectal cancer. We study principle mechanisms of signaling pathways and how they are dysregulated in cancer by high-throughput functional genomic approaches.
In the Boutros lab we are using 2D cell lines and 3D organoids as model systems. In order to analyze phenotypes in cultured cells we take an image-based approach in which we assign various features to the image and transfer this to a high-throughput setting. You will be part of a team of scientists to develop analytic methods based on images to answer important biological questions using various bioinformatic approaches. You will work with different bio-formats, perform segmentation, feature assignment, quantifications and upscaling of these processes using scripts as for example R. Main tasks will include the investigation of cellular phenotypes using image-based screenings and analysis, writing clean protocols for image analysis and supporting researchers in the experimental design.
We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in bioinformatics, image analysis, high-throughput data analysis, statistics and machine learning tools. Candidates should have an advanced academic degree (Ph.D.) in bioinformatics, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or related field and have published previously in peer-reviewed journals. Proficiency in R and command line is expected. Prior experience in image analysis programs like Fiji/ImageJ, Ilastik, CellProfiler or others are beneficial. The candidate should feel comfortable with high-tech work environment, and constant learning of new tools and innovations. He/she should be able to work independently and also have excellent team working skills. The position further requires organizational qualifications and the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external collaborators. An excellent written and oral command of English is essential.
