The Division of Pediatric Neurooncology at the German Cancer Research Center and the Hopp Children's Cancer Center Heidelberg is offering a postdoc position in computational biology.
Treatment resistance is a major problem in cancer. Bone and soft tissue tumors – known as sarcomas – in adolescents and young adults often stop responding to treatment. This is because cancer cells develop many new characteristics during the disease progression to become resistant to effective drugs. The interdisciplinary research consortium HEROES-AYA aims to discover how sarcomas' cellular heterogeneity and molecular mechanisms lead to treatment resistance. The researchers hope to obtain fundamental insights into the development of treatment resistance in tumors and potentially identify options for novel therapeutic approaches.
The project is being led by scientists from DKFZ, the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg and Dresden, and the Hopp Children's Cancer Center Heidelberg (KiTZ) and involves 12 research institutions. As part of the National Decade Against Cancer, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is providing more than 18 million euros to fund the project for five years.
As part of the initial diagnostic process in sarcoma patients, tissue samples of the tumor are taken, with further biopsies planned at later points in the course of the disease. This tumor material is subjected to highly detailed molecular profiling analysis of genome, genetic activity, epigenetics, and protein composition, analyzed at the level of individual cells. A total of 600 tumor samples from 220 patients will be analyzed at single-cell resolution.

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated postdoctoral computational researcher responsible for conducting detailed analyses of single-cell sequencing datasets. This is an exciting opportunity to work on large-scale integration of single-cell-omics and clinical data to understand new biological insights into the treatment resistance mechanisms. The postholder will develop methodologies / platforms for data analysis, interpretation, and visualization for (epi)genome of individual cells, including the determination of somatic mutations per cell and the resulting phylogenies to better understand tumor evolution and tumor heterogeneity.
The applicants must hold a master's degree and a PhD (or equivalent) in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics and biostatistics, computer science or a related subject. They should have strong analytical skills and broad experience with multiple programming languages (e.g., C++, Python, R, and Bash). The applicants must be proficient in Linux / Unix command lines. Basic knowledge of bioinformatics software and databases is essential. Experience in working in machine learning and high-performance computing environments is beneficial. It is a plus if they have expertise in the analysis and integration of next-generation sequencing and other multi-omics data, ideally including single-cell or single nucleus analysis and have a strong interest in oncology. Excellent communication and organization skills and proficiency in English are mandatory.
