Position: Research Software Engineer for Information and Data Science
Department: Medical Image Computing
Code number: 2023-0331
The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.
The DKFZ is member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest research organization, which develops solutions and technologies for the world of tomorrow.
In the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Framework, we implement a digitalization strategy for an enormous amount of high-quality research data created by the members of the Associaton. Modern technological methods such as artificial intelligence and machine learning enable data-based medical research. In translational medicine, this allows more precise individual treatments than ever before. Without the necessary context information (metadata), however, much research data cannot be found, interpreted, or reused.
The Helmholtz Association has recognized metadata as essential for high-quality research data and promotes the development and establishment of new concepts and technologies through the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration Platform (HMC). HMC aims to enrich complex and heterogeneous research data in the various phases of their creation with metadata to maintain and improve their value for research. The Helmholtz Federated IT Services (HIFIS) Platform offers all kinds of digital services, including a consultation service for researchers to support their software development challenges and help them bringing research into action.
In a joint position, you work for both platforms, bringing forward custom cross-domain and cross-center solutions for data and metadata handling. You build up expertise to consult Helmholtz researchers on their software and data challenges and to participate in their research.
Job description:
- You support and advise life sciences researchers in metadata management and in the implementation of FAIR principles.
- You advise on and contribute to domain-specific vocabularies, ontologies, and metadata schemes, and work on respective standards, guidelines, and tools for metadata management.
- You prepare position papers and publications.
- You actively and independently communicate and coordinate with national and international consortia, platforms and networks and help building interest groups and communities.
- You consult and support the design and implementation of research software projects across all disciplines.
- You participate in the specification and implementation of Helmholtz-wide software services.
Requirements:
- Completed university degree in computer science, data science, or a comparable field
- Programming skills in Python, JavaScript, Java or Bash accompanied by experience in SQL and Non-SQL databases as well as in in cloud technologies like Docker or Kubernetes
- Experience in analyzing complex data structures
