Position: PhD Student - Automated, Non-invasive CNS Lymphoma Diagnostics
Department: DKTK partner site Munich, Center for Neuropathology and Prion Research, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU)
Code number: 2023-0398
The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.
Together with university partners at seven renowned partner sites, we have established the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK).
For the DKTK partner site in Munich we are looking for a motivated PhD student to join the DKTK-funded Joint Funding Project „LeOPARD: Ad-hoc sequencing of Liquid and intra-Operative biopsies for Point-of-care And Rapid molecular Diagnostics” which is part of the Research Group “Translational Neurooncology” (headed by Prof. Dr. med. Patrick Harter).
The group is located at the Center for Neuropathology and Prion Research (LMU) and works in close collaboration with clinical researchers and bioinformaticians at the LMU in Munich.
The group is strongly connected with the Center for Neurooncology of the CCC Munich (NOKUM), and the neurooncological partner sites of the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK).
Job description:
Our research focuses on clinical and experimental neuropathology with a special focus on brain tumor patients. The major aim is the development of novel diagnostic tools, which help to classify tumors, furthermore, we develop therapy monitoring algorithms for the prediction of clinical courses. We apply bioinformatic algorithms on (epi)genetic, transcriptomic and proteomic data to understand biological and clinical behavior. The research group is composed of technicians, medical doctors and doctoral students.
The project LeOPARD focuses on rapid, minimal- or non-invasive early detection of cancer using nanopore DNA sequencing. The applied subproject deals with “automated, non-invasive CNS lymphoma diagnostics”. The candidate will apply and develop bioinformatic tools such as machine learning and data deconvolution algorithms.
Requirements:
Completed studies (Master of Science or equal qualification) in biology, biochemistry or bioinformatics is mandatory. Excellent knowledge and skills in handling and processing nucleic acid sequencing data and microarray data as well as advanced knowledge and skills in the application of machine learning algorithms is expected. Very good English language skills (C1 level) are required.
