Position: 2 PhD Students in the field of Cancer Systems Biology / Molecular Cancer Biology

Department: DKTK partner site Munich, Department "Translational Oncology with focus on Reverse Translation", LMU Klinikum Großhadern

Code number: 2023-0412

The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

Together with university partners at seven renowned partner sites, we have established the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK).

At the DKTK partner site Munich we are seeking two PhD students in the field of cancer systems biology or molecular cancer biology to join our new Junior Research Group “Cancer Systems Biology” within the Department “Translational Oncology with focus on Reverse Translation” at the LMU Klinikum Großhadern in Munich. Our research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of therapy resistance in cancer at the single-cell level. We have previously shown that cancer cells demonstrate cellular plasticity resulting in the alteration of transcriptional states and treatment escape. Using novel single-cell sequencing approaches, we seek to develop new experimental and computational strategies to help us define altered cell states in cancer and infiltrating immune cells.

One position will be located in the new junior research group, while the other position will be shared with Prof. Dr. Martin Sos in the newly established research department "Translational Oncology with focus on Reverse Translation". Both positions will focus broadly on developing new single cell technologies to improve our understanding of cancer cell plasticity and therapy resistance.

Job description:

Are you ready to be at the forefront of cancer research? As a PhD student in our research team you will have the unique opportunity to:

  • Experience research at the interface between experimental and computational biology, in an area of direct medical relevance
  • Generate and integrate/utilize multi-modal single-cell datasets to explore cell states in cancer cells and the immune microenvironment
  • Employ computational analysis, defining cellular states at single-cell resolution and uncovering regulatory networks driving transcriptional and epigenetic changes
  • Contribute to the development of strategies to modulate these cell states and overcome therapy resistance
  • Collaborate closely with other researchers to discuss and share results

Requirements:

We are seeking two talented doctoral candidates who are motivated to make a meaningful contribution to cancer research. You should bring a passion for cancer systems biology, prior research experience, and a high level of enthusiasm. You should hold a master's degree in a related field, such as molecular biology, biochemistry or bioinformatics. Excellent English language skills are required.

We offer:

  • Excellent framework conditions: state-of-the-art equipment and opportunities for international networking at the highest level
  • Access to international research networks
  • Doctoral salary with the usual social benefits
  • 30 days of vacation per year
  • Flexible working hours
  • Possibility of part-time work
  • Family-friendly working environment, e.g. parent-child room, advisory services
  • Sustainable travel to work: subsidized Germany job ticket
  • Unleash your full potential: targeted training and mentoring through the DKFZ International PhD Program and DKFZ Career Service
  • Our Corporate Health Management Program offers a holistic range of services for your well-being
