“Research for a life without cancer" is our mission at the German Cancer Research Center. We investigate how cancer develops, identify cancer risk factors and look for new cancer prevention strategies. We develop new methods with which tumors can be diagnosed more precisely and cancer patients can be treated more successfully. Every contribution counts – whether in research, administration or infrastructure. This is what makes our daily work so meaningful and exciting.

The Division of Microbiome and Cancer is seeking for as soon as possible a

At the Division of Microbiome and Cancer, we use both well-established and cutting-edge wet-lab techniques, a state-of-the-art germ-free mouse facility, and novel bioinformatics tools to uncover the relationships between the mammalian host, immune system, and the microbiome. We are elucidating the roles of these factors in carcinogenesis and immunotherapy efficacy while discovering predictive biomarkers for cancers and treatment outcome.

We use a variety of well-established and novel bioinformatics tools and software to explore and integrate the wealth of nucleic acid, protein, and metabolite data generated from wet-lab experiments or clinical samples. Advanced computational strategies to integrate metagenomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data are essential to fully understand and the complexity of host-microbiome interactions in the context of cancer.

Your Tasks

We are looking for a qualified and motivated Bioinformatician to support diverse areas of pipeline development and data analysis in the area of microbiome and cancer research. The candidate will support various clinical and laboratory-driven projects by developing customized multi-omics analysis approaches and generating quantitative insights into host-microbe interactions in cancer. The datasets include, amongst others, shotgun metagenomics sequencing, bacterial strain whole genome sequencing, host whole genome and RNA sequencing, and proteomics.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Support of multi-omics host-microbiome data analysis for diverse projects
  • Data visualization and interpretation of results in an inderdisciplinary team with basic researchers and clinicians
  • Customization of pipelines for cutting-edge research projects
  • Administration of high performance computing cluster access for research team
  • Support of experimental design and statistics for research team

Your Profile

  • Postdoctoral, PhD-level or MSc level experience in bioinformatics, e.g. a PhD degree in computational biology or a similar discipline. Proven track record of contributing towards reseach publications
  • Previous experience with HPC cluster work and on multi-omics bioinformatics projects, ideally including shotgun metagenomics datasets
  • Experience with python and/or R would be an advantage
  • Interest in cancer-microbiome relationships
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Reliability
  • Structured, independent, and careful way of working
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (English)
