Situated in a highly dynamic research environment at DKFZ (www.dkfz.de) and KiTZ (www.kitz-heidelberg.de), the Division of Pediatric Neurooncology (https://www.dkfz.de/en/paediatrische-neuroonkologie/index.php) is seeking a motivated bioinformatician to join the Clinical Bioinformatics subgroup for a 50% position.

The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary research team developing and applying a diverse range of state-of-the-art methodology to improve the diagnosis, treatment and early detection of childhood cancer. He/she will apply bioinformatics and statistical methods to analyse and interpret high-throughput ‘omics’ data, including whole genome and exome sequencing, as well as RNA-seq data. Our research has a strong translational focus and the successful candidate will interact closely with clinicians, physician scientists and experimental biologists, with a focus on performing data analyses (variant calling, gene fusion detection, among others) and subsequently compiling and communicating results for the INFORM registry (https://www.dkfz.de/en/inform/index.html). This is a fantastic opportunity for a computational scientist to join a dynamic team for a 50% position.

Job description:

Apply, improve and maintain existing bioinformatics pipelines for high-throughput genomic analysis of cancer samples
  • Assist Postdoctoral fellows and graduate students with bioinformatics analyses in clinical and research projects
  • Manage and archive large genomic data sets
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation


Master's degree in bioinformatics or a related scientific discipline (computational biology, statistics, computer science, or molecular biotechnology). Strong analytical skills, as well as broad experience with multiple scripting languages (python, R, bash, for example), common bioinformatics software (bwa, samtools, IGV, STAR, for example) and databases are essential. Experience in working in high-performance computing environments is required. Furthermore, reliability, attention to detail, communication skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary international team will be expected.
