Position: PhD Student

Department: Cell Cycle Control and Carcinogenesis

Code number: 2020-0237

The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

Job description:

The PhD project is focused on the interplay between the formation of focal adhesions (FA) and the organization of the mitotic spindle apparatus in metastatic breast cancer.

Correct spindle orientation is achieved through signaling pathways that provide a molecular link between the cell cortex and spindle microtubules in an F-actin-dependent manner (Zhu et al., J Cell Biol 2013, 200, 773-787; Kschonsak and Hoffmann, J Cell Sci 131, 2018). Mitotic spindle orientation abnormalities and loss of cell adhesion, have been proposed to facilitate cancer invasion and metastasis, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying these processes are largely unknown. To study the interplay between the two processes we will use ex vivo breast cancer models that show different characteristics in response to their invasion and metastatic properties.
